Royal Caribbean's Hero of the Seas has floated for the first time at the Meyer Turku shipyard in Finland, marking a major construction milestone for the fourth ship in the cruise line's Icon class.
The float-out took place on Friday 4 September 2026 following a traditional launching ceremony. After the building dock was flooded, the vessel was moved to an adjacent outfitting berth, where construction and interior work will continue.
Floating out is an important stage in the creation of a new cruise ship, but it is not the same as delivery. Hero of the Seas must still undergo extensive outfitting, commissioning, testing and sea trials before it can be handed over to Royal Caribbean.
Fourth Icon-class ship reaches the water
Hero of the Seas will become the fourth member of Royal Caribbean's Icon class, following Icon of the Seas, Star of the Seas and Legend of the Seas.
Meyer Turku lists the vessel at approximately 250,800 gross tons and 365 metres in length, with accommodation for around 5,610 passengers based on double occupancy. Its maximum passenger capacity is expected to be approximately 7,600.
The ship's main hull assembly was completed during July 2026 when its final block was lifted into position. Floating the completed hull out of the construction dock now allows the yard to move into the next phase of the project.
Outfitting and testing still to come
At the outfitting berth, teams will continue installing and completing cabins, restaurants, entertainment spaces, technical equipment and other public areas.
The ship's propulsion, power generation, navigation, communications and safety systems will need to be commissioned and tested. Hotel services, including water, ventilation, catering and accommodation systems, must also be proven before delivery.
Sea trials will provide one of the next major public milestones. During those trials, the shipyard and specialist teams will test the vessel at sea before any outstanding work is completed and Royal Caribbean formally accepts the ship.
Hero of the Seas planned for Miami
Royal Caribbean says Hero of the Seas is scheduled to arrive in Miami in August 2027.
The vessel is planned to operate year-round seven-night Eastern and Western Caribbean cruises from the Florida homeport. Its itineraries will include visits to Perfect Day at CocoCay, Royal Caribbean's private destination in The Bahamas.
The ship will feature eight neighbourhoods, nine pools and 28 dining venues. Announced attractions include new family raft slides, cooking classes for different age groups and the three-storey Ultimate Family Treehouse accommodation.
The Hideaway is being expanded with two adults-focused pools, including what Royal Caribbean describes as the largest swim-up bar at sea.
What the float-out means
The milestone places Hero of the Seas visibly closer to completion and confirms that its main hull is now afloat. It does not guarantee the delivery or inaugural-service dates, which remain dependent on the successful completion of construction, commissioning and trials.
Royal Caribbean continues to advertise the ship's August 2027 arrival in Miami, and Meyer Turku lists delivery for 2027. Neither company has announced a delay to that timetable.
Deck7 will update this report as the vessel progresses towards sea trials, delivery and its first passenger sailing.
