Phoenix Reisen has marked the departure of Deutschland from its ocean fleet after the traditional German cruise ship completed its final voyage for the operator.

The 520-passenger vessel returned to Bremerhaven on Saturday 5 September 2026, bringing an 11-season association with Phoenix Reisen to an end. The operator subsequently published a farewell tribute celebrating the ship's classic character and the voyages completed with its guests and crew.

Deutschland is not being withdrawn permanently from service. The vessel continues to operate under the name World Odyssey as the travelling campus used by the Semester at Sea educational programme.

Final Phoenix cruise returned to Bremerhaven

The ship's last Phoenix Reisen itinerary was an eight-night round trip from Bremerhaven, departing on 28 August and returning on 5 September.

The voyage crossed the English Channel and North Sea, with calls including Portsmouth and Fowey in the United Kingdom, Saint-Malo in France and IJmuiden in the Netherlands.

Phoenix Reisen used its farewell message to look back on the ship's distinctive atmosphere, traditional elegance and the many itineraries completed during its seasonal service. It thanked Deutschland for the shared sea miles and memories created aboard.

The final sailing concluded a 2026 farewell programme comprising eight cruises from Bremerhaven, Cuxhaven and Kiel. Longer itineraries during the season included a 22-night Atlantic-islands voyage and a 16-night cruise around the British Isles.

Seasonal partnership began in 2016

Phoenix Reisen began operating Deutschland seasonally in 2016, following the ship's earlier financial and ownership difficulties. Under the arrangement, the vessel served the German cruise market during the summer before reverting to its World Odyssey identity for educational voyages.

The seasonal charter was extended to include 2026 after the interruption caused by the Covid-19 pandemic. Phoenix Reisen said a further extension was not available because of the interests of the ship's US ownership.

The unusual arrangement allowed one vessel to maintain two clearly separate identities. Phoenix Reisen marketed summer holidays aboard Deutschland, while the Institute for Shipboard Education used World Odyssey as the home of Semester at Sea during other parts of the year.

Semester at Sea is an educational study-abroad programme rather than a conventional cruise line. Its voyages combine university teaching aboard the ship with visits to countries across several continents.

A modern ship with a traditional identity

Deutschland was built by Howaldtswerke-Deutsche Werft in Kiel and entered service in May 1998. Its interiors were designed to evoke a classic grand hotel, giving the ship an identity markedly different from newer resort-style vessels.

The ship became especially familiar to German television audiences through its long association with the ZDF series Das Traumschiff. Its relatively small size also enabled Phoenix Reisen to include ports and destinations that cannot routinely accommodate today's largest cruise ships.

Phoenix Reisen's current ocean fleet continues with Amadea, Amera and Artania. The departure of Deutschland nevertheless removes one of the most recognisable traditional vessels from the company's programme.

Deutschland continues as World Odyssey

After completing its Phoenix farewell season, the ship resumes its educational role as World Odyssey. Semester at Sea advertises voyages lasting more than 100 days, during which the vessel operates as both a residential home and a floating university campus.

The programme is administered by the non-profit Institute for Shipboard Education in partnership with Colorado State University. Ship operations and the academic programme are therefore distinct from the conventional cruise holidays previously sold by Phoenix Reisen.

Cruise Industry News reported that the vessel is expected to remain laid up during summer 2027, when it would previously have operated its Phoenix programme. Its continuing Semester at Sea schedule means the farewell marks the end of Deutschland's Phoenix Reisen career rather than the end of the ship's working life.
